Three numbers, one entered pulse

The tap tempo half time double time display begins with the recent median created by your taps. Half is that value divided by two. Double is multiplied by two. The page has not made three measurements; it shows three related pulse conventions.

At 90 BPM, candidates are 45 and 180. Context decides whether movement, notation, grid, or musical feel uses one of them.

Backbeat tapping

In a 4/4 groove near quarter note = 100, snares on beats two and four occur twice per bar, creating gaps near 1.2 seconds. Tapping only snares can yield 50 BPM. Double candidate restores 100 as a quarter-grid option.

The 50 result is not false if the chosen event really is the backbeat. Label it.

Subdivision tapping

Eighth-note hi-hats at the same quarter grid occur near 200 per minute. Tapping them yields 200; half candidate shows 100. Again, the site cannot hear hi-hats or know the intended unit.

Reset before changing from hats to quarters.

Worked recent answer

Gaps of 1,010, 990, and 1,000 ms convert to about 59.41, 60.61, and 60 BPM. Median is 60. Half candidate is 30; double is 120. A listener who tapped every second quarter note may choose 120 for the editing grid, while a slow movement pulse may remain 60.

Feel and arithmetic

Half-time feel can place prominent events more sparsely while the underlying subdivision continues. Double-time feel can make events seem faster without necessarily changing the underlying song duration. These musical terms have contextual nuance beyond multiplying a number.

How to choose

Count the main pulse aloud. Watch how bars, steps, or cue groups align. Ask what unit the downstream task expects. If a metronome marking or score is available, compare its named note value. If a deck or editor reports another rate, inspect whether the difference is exactly two.

Run a separate sequence at each candidate level rather than averaging them.

Other factors

Triple and compound relationships can create factors of three, which the interface does not display. A once-per-bar tap in 3/4 may be one third of quarter-note rate. Half/double candidates are helpful, not exhaustive.

Slow ballad scenario

A ballad can invite a broad hand motion at 36 events per minute while the practical quarter-note reference is 72. If a listener taps the broad motion, the main answer correctly reflects those actions and the double candidate exposes the alternative. The listener should not silently replace 36 with 72. A useful note says “broad two-beat gesture ≈36; quarter-level candidate ≈72.”

Now imagine the accompaniment adds repeated eighth notes at 144. Tapping those notes generates a third coherent view of the same passage. The three readings are not competing sensor verdicts; they are descriptions of different recurring levels chosen by a person.

Editing a written brief

When handing an estimate to someone else, state the main entered pulse first, then explain why a factor candidate may fit their convention. For example: “Manual backbeat taps gave about 62; the quarter-note candidate is about 124; confirm against the score.” This wording preserves provenance. Writing only 124 would hide the fact that the measured events occurred half as often.

Avoid genre-based correction. A familiar style may make one value seem likely, but unusual productions and playback changes exist. Candidate selection must rest on observable structure and the downstream unit.

Candidate review sequence

First, tap one clearly named event for four to nine occurrences. Second, read the main rate and both displayed candidates without choosing immediately. Third, count aloud over a fresh pass and see which event level matches the intended task. Finally, Reset and tap that level directly. If the new main result approximates the earlier candidate, the relationship is supported by two manual observations.

This procedure does not validate downbeat, phase, meter, or playback integrity. It simply makes a factor-of-two interpretation explicit instead of allowing an unexplained number change.

When neither candidate fits

Do not force a choice. Compound grouping, once-per-bar events, irregular accents, or a genuinely changing source may produce another relationship. Report the tapped unit as observed and use an appropriate musical or production method for deeper analysis.

Limits

The page cannot infer meter, notation, genre, dance count, cadence, or professional grid. It does not listen to audio or connect to software. A factor match supports a convention hypothesis, not accuracy proof.

Privacy

Candidates derive locally from current-page timestamps. No pulse choice, BPM, or tap history is stored or uploaded.
