Name the large pulse
The instruction to tap quarter notes not subdivisions prevents a common doubling error. A repeating hi-hat or visual flicker may occur twice per beat. If you follow it, the arithmetic is consistent but the label can be wrong for the intended grid.
Count “one, two, three, four” with the main beat before touching the control. Tap once per count.
Quarter versus eighth
At quarter note = 100 BPM, quarter gaps are 600 ms. Eighth-note gaps are 300 ms and convert to 200 BPM. The page cannot see notation; it only sees the faster timing.
Half-time candidate beside 200 is 100, which prompts a pulse-level check. It does not automatically prove quarters were intended.
Avoid alternating levels
Do not tap quarters for one bar and eighths for the next. Gaps alternate between roughly 600 and 300 ms, producing a mixed recent median that does not represent one coherent event.
Reset immediately when changing level. Wait through a few events and start again.
Drum-pattern example
A snare may land on beats two and four while hi-hat plays eighths. Snare-only tapping can yield 50 at a 100-BPM quarter grid; hi-hat tapping can yield 200; quarter pulse yields 100. All three are factor-related views.
Choose the unit needed for editing, notation, movement, or conversation. Report it with the number.
Compound meter
In 6/8, a natural large pulse may be dotted quarters rather than written quarter notes. Blindly insisting on quarter notes can be less meaningful. The broader principle is one consistent primary pulse, clearly labeled.
A dotted-quarter at 80 has 750-ms gaps; eighth subdivisions occur at 240 per minute. Use context rather than the largest visible event count.
Visual and movement cues
Lights, steps, hand motions, and cuts can contain subdivisions. Ask whether each action marks the main pulse or a smaller division. TapTempo.one provides no automatic beat hierarchy.
When uncertain, run one slow-level sequence and one fast-level sequence after Reset. Factor-of-two or factor-of-three relationships reveal convention choices, not accuracy rankings.
Reporting
Write “quarter-note pulse ≈100 BPM,” not merely “100.” If you tapped backbeats, say so. If the answer is provisional, keep that word. A useful note can include the half/double alternatives displayed by the page.
Guitar-strumming scenario
Imagine a guitarist playing steady down-up eighth-note strums while the harmonic rhythm changes once per bar. The visible hand moves twice per quarter beat, making it tempting to tap every stroke. Before touching the disc, count the foot pulse underneath: one, two, three, four. Tap only those four positions. If the result is near 108 while the strumming attempt was near 216, the factor relationship explains the different event choices.
Neither number describes chord-change frequency if chords last a full bar. A separate bar-level observation would answer another question and should not be folded into the quarter-note sequence. Labeling protects all three concepts from being collapsed into “the tempo.”
Visual editor scenario
A motion graphic may flash on eighth-note accents while a larger shape expands once per beat. To estimate the main movement pulse, follow the expansion, not every flash. If the animation deliberately shifts accent placement, stop at the transition. TapTempo.one sees only your actions and cannot determine which layer was authored as primary.
This is why the afterimage feedback on the page should not become a new rhythm source. Look back to the material after each activation rather than syncing to the interface’s decorative response.
A pulse-selection test
Silently count two bars before starting. If the spoken numbers align with equivalent musical locations, proceed. If you begin adding “and” between every number, those inserted syllables identify subdivisions. Make one clean quarter-level pass, Reset, then deliberately make an eighth-level pass. The answers should be related, but any mismatch does not diagnose the source. Manual timing and expressive performance still contribute.
For notation or sharing, add the note value and section name. For movement or editing, name the observed event in ordinary language. The interface offers candidates as a prompt to ask this semantic question, not as an automatic correction switch.
Why median cannot fix level
A median can reduce one unusual gap but cannot transform consistently doubled input into quarter notes. Eight perfect 300-ms gaps still produce 200 BPM. Statistical steadiness is not metrical correctness.
