Focus, then follow
The online tap tempo tool has one primary job. Focus the large pulse disc and activate it on each recurrence of the same perceived beat. Use pointer, touch, Space, or Enter. A separate Reset stays available without competing visually with the main action.
The surface responds visually and through an accessible status message. Motion remains subtle and respects reduced-motion preferences. Focus remains on the surface so keyboard users do not have to relocate it after every result.
Result stages
Tap one starts the pulse and shows a tap count of one. No tempo exists because no interval exists. Tap two creates one interval and displays a clearly labeled temporary BPM. Tap three updates that temporary orientation.
Tap four creates the minimum three intervals for the primary recent-median answer. Later taps use the newest available gaps up to a maximum of eight. Tap count remains visible even though the interface does not expose an interval ledger.
The state label prevents a one-gap estimate from looking equal to the settled recent answer.
Median calculation
Every accepted gap is converted with 60000 / interval milliseconds. The newest at most eight rates are sorted. An odd count uses the middle value. An even count averages the two middle rates.
For gaps of 600, 590, 610, and 600 milliseconds, rates are 100, about 101.69, about 98.36, and 100. The median of four rates averages the two central 100 values, producing 100 BPM.
The interface may round for legibility, but calculation uses unrounded values. Decimal display does not claim matching accuracy.
Half and double
Alongside the main answer, the page shows half and double. A 100-BPM answer produces 50 and 200. These candidates help when you tapped backbeats, bars, or subdivisions rather than the intended quarter-note level.
They do not detect meter or choose a better number. The main answer remains tied to your chosen event.
The three-second boundary
When the gap from the last tap is greater than 3,000 milliseconds, the next activation becomes a new first tap. At exactly 3,000 milliseconds, the interval remains valid under the contract. This precise comparison avoids ambiguous implementation.
The reset boundary keeps two visits from becoming one implausibly slow sequence. Slow bar-level rates may exceed the threshold and are outside this deliberately beat-oriented design.
Reset behavior
Reset clears timestamps, count, primary value, candidates, and status. It returns focus to the main surface and announces that the sequence is clear. Changing pulse level also requires Reset; otherwise quarter and eighth notes would mix.
No undo or saved history exists. The absence keeps the page lightweight and private but means the result must be noted elsewhere if needed.
Accessible event handling
Space must not scroll the page while the control is focused. Held keys must not generate repeated taps. Touch must not be followed by a duplicate synthetic click. Pointer activation cannot require precise coordinates inside a tiny target.
The visual pulse is not the only feedback. Text status, tap count, and BPM are available to assistive technology. Color does not carry state alone. The Reset control has its own clear name.
Good technique for this interface
Listen through a few events first. Begin on a clear boundary, look away from the changing value, and tap at least four times. Continue for several more events when the source is stable. Stop, read one answer, and repeat after Reset if the value matters.
For a source near 120 BPM, ordinary gaps are near 500 ms. A missed event may create about 1,000 ms and a temporary 60-BPM value. The median can reduce one extreme’s influence but cannot identify its cause.
Read after the sequence
Avoid steering your fingers toward a number while it is still changing. Follow the audible or visible event, complete a short run, then inspect the display. This separation makes the estimate describe the source you perceived instead of a target you unconsciously tried to manufacture.
Product limits
This is not the statistical counter product. It offers no interval list, mean, spread, outlier removal, A/B comparison, stability score, or bar-factor calculator. It cannot analyze audio, synchronize a device, identify a recording, or certify professional timing.
All timestamps remain in active page memory. Nothing is uploaded, persisted, associated with an account, or sent to a calculation service.
Frequently asked questions
Can I tap anywhere on the page?
No. Only the focused or directly activated pulse surface records events, preventing page-wide key capture.
Why did the sequence restart?
The previous gap was greater than three seconds, or Reset was used.
Is eight intervals always best?
No. It is a product choice balancing responsiveness and simplicity, not a universal measurement rule.
Can I see every interval?
No. That deeper diagnostic workflow belongs to a different product boundary.
