Tap tempo for running can estimate a perceived cadence only after the convention is named. Tapping every footfall gives all-step cadence. Tapping one foot gives approximately half that number. The half/double display makes this relationship visible.

The page does not sense steps, connect to a wearable, or verify movement.

Worked cadence example

All-step gaps of 333, 335, and 332 ms convert to about 180.18, 179.10, and 180.72 steps per minute. Median is about 180.18. Half candidate is about 90.09, corresponding roughly to one-foot events.

Report “approximately 180 all steps/min” rather than a bare 180 BPM. Tempo terminology can be confusing in movement contexts.

Music versus steps

A runner may align one step per beat, two steps per beat, or another pattern. Tapping music and tapping footfalls are separate observations. Reset between them and label each unit.

The site does not recommend matching music tempo to cadence or claim a beneficial rate.

Short sequence and repetition

Four taps provide three gaps. Continue when a safe recorded or observed sequence is stable, up to the recent eight-gap window. Repeat separately. Differences can reflect natural variation, observation, input, or changed convention.

Do not stop selectively when a preferred cadence appears.

Device and observer effects

Touch, keyboard, visual observation, and memory introduce timing differences. A browser median is not a wearable measurement. The site cannot assess sensor quality, biomechanics, fatigue, or running economy.

Recorded-clip scenario

A runner has a short, non-sensitive clip recorded on a track and wants a rough description of visible footfalls. While seated, an observer watches a straight section, chooses every ground contact as the event, and taps six times. The note says “visible all-step cadence, middle of clip, approximate.” It does not include location, identity, route, pace, or a recommendation.

If the camera angle hides one contact, the observer stops rather than inventing a tap. Another clearly visible segment becomes a new sequence after Reset. This matters because a single omitted all-step event can make one gap roughly twice as long and pull attention toward the one-foot candidate.

Music-cadence comparison

Suppose the observed steps are near 176 per minute while the accompaniment’s beat is near 88. That factor-of-two relationship may indicate two steps per musical beat. Measure the music and steps as separate trials with distinct labels. The page cannot establish whether alignment is intentional, comfortable, or beneficial.

Do not change movement to make the displayed numbers match. This guide describes observations only. Training adjustments require context beyond timing taps.

Observer checklist

Stand or sit where observation is safe and lawful. Select one foot or all contacts before starting. Use four to nine visible equivalent events, monitor the count, and stop if sight is obstructed. Record the convention, source segment, approximate value, and independent method if one exists. Clear the page when finished.

If two observers disagree, first compare conventions. One may have followed the left foot while the other counted both feet. Repeat on the same segment only if it can be done without exposing sensitive media or distracting anyone.

Why the number remains descriptive

Cadence varies with terrain, task, individual, and moment. A recent manual estimate does not establish a baseline, trend, diagnosis, or target. It also cannot separate human reaction from source timing. Rounding and explicit wording—“about 176 observed all steps per minute”—communicate the limited evidence better than an unexplained BPM value.
